The induction of immune responses against tumor cells through vaccination is emerging as a promising cancer treatment. This approach leverages the immune system's ability to recognize and target tumor cells, fostering specific immunity against neoplastic growths. Research highlights the immune system's significant role in cancer prevention, with numerous cases of patients, particularly those with malignant melanoma, exhibiting spontaneous immune responses that lead to tumor regression. Recent advancements in understanding immune system components, their interactions, and the regulation of immune responses have enabled the design of vaccination strategies that enhance cell-mediated immunity against tumors. A key breakthrough was the identification of relevant tumor antigens, which serve as effective targets for anti-tumor immune responses. Initial clinical trials utilizing these vaccine strategies have shown promising results. However, despite some successful outcomes, many patients still do not achieve relief from cancer through vaccination. These early trials and related studies have provided critical insights that will guide future research and development in this evolving field.
