Content: The use of tailored cutting edges is state of the art in cutting processes. Prepared cutting edges have a higher lifetime, performance and higher process reliability than unprepared cutting edges. Several methods for cutting edge preparation are known. However, they cannot be used universally for the different kind of cutting tools and must even be combined with one another per the required preparation result. When manufacturing cutting tools, cutting edge preparation is an extra operation. Depending on the type of the cutting tool and the desired cutting edge preparation, various preparation methods need to be provided. This tightens production factors and prolongs the production time of the cutting tool. Moreover, the separate machining involves the risk of rejects and rework due to the necessary handling of the workpieces and the resulting risk of damage to the cutting edges. In summary, the advantages of cutting edge preparation are on the cutting tool users side and the expenses on the cutting tool manufacturers side. A preparation process which would outweigh the disadvantages would be desirable for a cutting tool manufacturer. Within this research a method was developed that integrates the preparation into the tool grinding process. Special elastically bonded grinding tools were combined with a specially developed process strategy. Thus, the shape and size of the cutting edge rounding can be controlled independently. Investigations on cost effectiveness show the advantage of the developed preparation method for cutting tool manufacturer. Cutting tests with different milling tools have advantages in terms of tool life for those tools whose cutting edges have been prepared with the above described method
