The increased variability in climatic factors along with droughts and floods are challenging the rural people worldwide. This research focuses on vulnerability, food security, adaptation and coping measures of drought and flood prone rural areas of Odisha state in India. The dissertation consists of five empirical essays. Based on the results of this study, some interventions such as providing formal education, weather based insurance, livelihood diversifications etc. are recommended for vulnerability reduction and overall rural development. The information regarding the vulnerability, food security and adaptations provided in thesis can be used in the formulation of effective policies for reducing vulnerability and sustainable rural development.
