Musicology has to cope with transdisciplinary challenges: In the 21st century linguistics, philosophy, cognitive neurosciences and psychology, information and media technology, biological anthropology and other disciplines have become increasingly interested in music research introducing new concepts, questions, methods and technologies for investigating music. In addition, an „intradisciplinary“ challenge is musicology's fractionation into several diverging subdisciplines which puts the field's unity at risk. SysMus11, a young researcher conference, strives for putting aside blinkers and metaphysical prejudices concerning music by including key lectures about language and music evolution, motor cognition, the history of music as media and future methodological demands. The results of SysMus11 are presented in this book which intends to open up an intradisciplinary as well as transdisciplinary discourse for music research.
