For an immigrant from Germany, Southern California held the promise of land and opportunity. Though he loved the land of his birth, Walter Schmid's father knew that if he wanted to own land and find prosperity, he would have to leave the fatherland. As Germany continued to struggle after World War I, and then through the horrors of World War II, the Schmid family worked hard, reaping the abundance that their newly adopted land had to offer.
